Clinical Interpretation Guide

Score 15: Normal consciousness

Score 13-14: Mild head injury - Close observation recommended

Score 9-12: Moderate head injury - Admission and careful monitoring required

Score 3-8: Severe head injury - Immediate critical care and intervention needed

Note: The pGCS should be used in conjunction with clinical assessment. Serial measurements are more valuable than single assessments. Consider age-appropriate normal ranges when interpreting scores.
Age-Specific Criteria

<2 years (Infants)

Verbal: Coos/babbles, irritable cry, cries to pain, moans to pain, none

Motor: Normal spontaneous movements, withdraws to touch, withdraws to pain, abnormal flexion, abnormal extension, none

2-5 years (Young Children)

Verbal: Appropriate words/phrases, inappropriate words, cries/screams to pain, grunts to pain, none

Motor: Obeys commands, localizes pain, withdraws to pain, abnormal flexion, abnormal extension, none

>5 years (Older Children)

Verbal: Oriented and converses, confused conversation, inappropriate words, incomprehensible sounds, none

Motor: Obeys commands, localizes pain, withdraws to pain, abnormal flexion, abnormal extension, none
