Validated clinical scoring system for assessing severity of croup (laryngotracheobronchitis) in children.

About the Westley Croup Score:

  • Validated scoring system for assessing croup severity
  • Score range: 0-17 points
  • Used to guide treatment decisions and disposition
  • Serial scoring can track response to treatment

Typical Croup Management:

  • Mild: Single dose oral dexamethasone 0.15-0.6 mg/kg (max 10mg), observe, discharge if stable
  • Moderate: Oral/IM dexamethasone + nebulized epinephrine (adrenaline), observe ≥2-4 hours
  • Severe: Nebulized epinephrine, dexamethasone, consider admission, possible airway intervention
